How do I know if my BMW has a N47 engine?
The easiest way to tell are as follows:
- Exhaust pipe – Cars with the oval shaped exhaust pipe have the N47 engine and DPF fitted.
- Start/stop – Cars fitted with the N47 engine also have Efficient Dynamics which means the engine will cut out automatically to save fuel when stationery in traffic and car is put in neutral.

Is N47 really that bad?
N47C (03/07) engines are safe as they have rectified the parts which break and lead to timing chain failure. All the 5 series 320D suffer from timing chain issues, as they never had N47C. So if you wish to go for 320D, then make sure it has N47C. Hang on, the timing chain affects issue all N47s up to around 2011!

Today I borrowed my brother-in-law’s 2015 B47 and it was an interesting comparison. I would say the B47 is fractionally quieter and smoother but there really is very little in it, in fact I found his more rattley when cold but things settle down once the engine was warm.
