There are various theories about the origins of the name Anniesland. The Glasgow writer Jack House suggested that the name is derived from the Gaelic ‘annis’ meaning ‘destitute’, or from ‘anfhann’ meaning ‘weak and feeble’. To tie in with this idea, there is a theory that the Knights Templar had a hospice in the area.
