Since we created this conversion kit in 2008 it’s allowed enthusiasts to easily add OEM BMW paddle shifters to their E9x E8x BMW that did not come with paddles from the factory. The necessary OEM part numbers for this upgrade are included in the guide.

Can you mess up your engine with paddle shifters?

You won’t, and can’t damage the car by manually selecting gears with the paddles. The simple reason is that the computer controlling the transmission simply won’t let you select an inappropriate gear that will do damage.

Unfortunately, paddle shifters do not save gas as they allow the driver to override the automatic transmission’s programming and drive the vehicle more aggressively, which inevitably means using more gas than if the automatic transmission software was allowed to do its thing.

Do you have to let off the gas with paddle shifters?

No. You must not change position of the gas pedal during M +/-. Your car has electronically controlled gas, so it automatically does itself what it needs with throttle.

Can paddle shifters increase mileage?

Though it makes the driving experience a little less fun (i.e less fast) it really does force the vehicle to get better fuel economy. Once I started utilizing the paddle shifter in this way, I immediately noticed a jump up to 26-28 MPG, even when driving up mountain switchbacks.
