Myanmar was my most highly anticipated places, and it both exceeded those expectations, and massively fell short of them. Yangon totally rocked my world, and culinary senses, but Mawlamyine was a damp squid in comparison.
Needless to say, we left Myanmar very different people to when we arrived. I know that sounds disgustingly hyperbolic but given that our only travel prior to Myanmar had experienced well, very travelled places, particularly in the well-trodden Southeast Asia.
But Burma was off the Banana Pancake trail, and we felt it profoundly in every difficult transaction, every misunderstanding and more importantly, every awe-inspiring and gasp inducing off the beaten path experience we had. Yep, we had many in Myanmar.
I captured this image in Inle Lake, which is the most tourist place in Myanmar by far, but with good reason. At six am, floating along the peaceful river watching the fishermen catch a weeks haul in one fail swoop of a delicate ankle.
