I’m not sure that there are many cities in the World that polarise people’s opinions quite like Bangkok. All at once seedy, and full of religion with an incredible food scene and one hell of a nightlife. Stories of ping pong shows, lady boy cabaret’s and criminally alcoholic buckets drunk in gallons by the 18-24 set abound. Yep, Bangkok is one hell of a pick for my Photo of the Week.
I first travelled to Bangkok back in 2009 on my first ever solo trip and fell in love with the intense smells (sometimes gross, often yummy), people and sheer volume of monks. Loved 7-11, hated tuk tuk drivers. Liked to eat cheap Pad Kra Pow, hated Mango Sticky Rice (that changed!). There is just so….much, to do, see and experience in Bangkok. And it’s big! Bigger than you realise. I adore Banglampu and the showmanship of the Khao San Rd. Sukhumvit kinda rocks my world a little, and is THE place to go for some upmarket shopping (or air-con, which is exactly what Oli and I used the shopping malls for). Soi Cowbow is like the Thanon Khao San on crack, and always entertaining and the epic food street of Soi 11 is not to be missed.
Ladies night every Wednesday means bottomless Prosecco for the fairer sex, and I NEVER miss a trip to the ginormous Chatuchak weekend market when I am in town. It’s saying something when a crappy post I wrote ages ago has remained my most popular post, and there is one reason for that — it is all about Bangkok. I get a huge chunk of my traffic from people searching for terms like ‘Bangkok’, ‘Things to do Bangkok’ and ‘turtle feet Bangkok’….yeah, not sure what that means, and I am super sorry to disappoint with the lack of turtle feet 😉
