Although there should be loads of things to see and do in Kuala Lumpur (it is, after all, a capital city), the choices are pretty limited. Once you’ve decided what to do from the limited list, one has to then get to the place. Now, I should preface this with the understanding that we may have just been unlucky with the time we went. There were construction works on the MRT line closest to us, meaning that we had to walk to the next stop, and as such journeys were not made easy. I get that, I live in London. I (along with 8 million others) enjoyed almost no working underground at the weekends for the 18 months leading up to the London 2012 Olympics. HOWEVER, what I didn’t have to deal with then, that Kuala Lumpur thrust at me, was constantly having to cross 8-carriageway roads, with fines for J-walking, and an apparent severe lack of anywhere to cross. Whoever designed the road layout in Kuala Lumpur either hates everyone, or wants all pedestrians to die. I will offer you a genuine example. Imagine you are at a cross roads. You want to get to the point diagonally opposite you. Not all that difficult to imagine, so hopefully you’re all still with me. To achieve this minuscule feat, you have to turn around from where you want to go, walk 200 metres away from the junction, cross the road via a bridge, walk the 200 metres back. Then you have to repeat the same feat to cross the next road. I mean what is going on here?!??!! Why do I have to walk almost a kilometre just to cross the bloody road! I’m afraid that there is not much positive so far, so I will try to correct that in order to give a balanced view of the city.
